Can I claim myself for 2011 instead of my parents?

I;m 23 years old, was a full time student from Jan.17 to May 13 and graduated college in May. I worked full time the entire year. I paid for my car loan, student loan, cell phone, clothes, car insurance, gas, and medical bills (i have my own health insurance and it is deducted from my paycheck). I would like to claim myself this year, is that allowed? I just want to avoid any future problems with the IRS in case of an audit.I mean file as independent…had to correct that…

  1. Yes, you can file your tax return instead of being a dependent on your tax return.Did you parents support you and provide you with more if half of your support? If they did they may want to claim you as a dependent. If they did not, you can be on your own however inform your parents about it so you will not be claimed on their tax return.

  2. Nope. Full time student for 5 months, under 24, and live in yoru parents home, you are a dependent. Those bills you list don;t amount to half your support.
